The contract year ends on

Pre-filled with 31 December. Change it to the date your conditions give.

From your conditions, if they state one.

How these dates are counted
  • The day shown is the last day on which your insurer must have received the notice. Whether your conditions count the day of receipt or the day of posting is for them to say: check.
  • The notice period is counted back in whole calendar months from the end of the last day of cover: three months before 31 December is 30 September.
  • By law a supplement can be ended at the end of the third or any later year with three months’ notice, in writing or in any form that proves the text (VVG Art. 35a para. 1), also if it started before 2022 (Art. 103a). We count year 3 from the start date you enter: year 1 ends on the day before the first anniversary. Your conditions may count differently, and may allow an earlier end (Art. 35a para. 2); the line “By your conditions” uses the dates you enter.
  • A notice day on a weekend is not moved. For basic insurance FOPH moves a 30 November that falls on a Sunday to the Friday before (fact sheet of 23.09.2025); nothing like that is stated for supplements, so post earlier.

Before you cancel or change

8 steps, in order.

In this order. FOPH publishes a sample letter for cancelling a voluntary supplement on priminfo.

  1. Get the new insurer’s acceptance first, in writing. Cancel the old policy only when the new insurer has accepted you. If you only change your basic insurance, you do not have to cancel the supplement at all.

Source: FOPH guide p. 16; moneyland.ch, Zusatzversicherung kündigen (14.08.2026); FOPH fact sheet “Wechsel der Krankenkasse”, 23.09.2025

  2. Answer the health questions completely and truthfully. A wrong or missing answer can cost you the new contract and benefits for the losses it affected.

    Source: VVG Art. 4, 6

  3. Compare the cover, not the name. What a supplement contains differs by insurer. Put the benefits side by side before you decide.

    Source: FOPH guide p. 16

  4. Think about your age. The new insurer prices by your age and sex today, and a supplement you cancel may not be available again from about age 55 to 65.

    Source: priminfo.admin.ch, Zusatzversicherungen; FOPH guide p. 16

  5. Ask about the combined discount. If basic and supplementary insurance are at one insurer, ask both what the supplement costs without the discount.

    Source: Konsumentenschutz, Prämienvergleich Krankenkasse

  6. Read the end date and the form in your conditions. The notice period of a supplement usually differs from that of basic insurance and is in your general insurance conditions. The VVG allows any form that proves the text, but many insurers ask for a signed letter; check yours.

Source: FOPH fact sheet “Wechsel der Krankenkasse”, 23.09.2025; priminfo.admin.ch, Zusatzversicherungen; moneyland.ch, Zusatzversicherung kündigen (14.08.2026)

  7. Special windows differ. The VVG gives no right to leave because the premium rises. Some insurers allow it in their conditions, within a window they set, for example until the end of the year, until the end of November or for a month after the change is announced. After a partial loss you, not the insurer, may end the contract until the payout is made.

    Source: VVG Art. 35a para. 4, Art. 42; moneyland.ch, Zusatzversicherung kündigen (14.08.2026)

  8. A new policy can be revoked. You can revoke an application or its acceptance within 14 days, in writing or in any form that proves the text.

What basic insurance already covers

Hospital, outpatient, dental, abroad and daily allowance: what a supplement adds, and what basic pays already.

Basic insurance (KVG) pays the same benefits at every insurer. A supplement (VVG) pays for what it does not, and each insurer decides what its supplements contain.

Hospital: ward and doctor

Supplements typically add

A semi-private or private ward, free choice of doctor in the hospital and, with some products, free choice of hospital across Switzerland.

Basic insurance already covers

  • Treatment in the general ward of a hospital on the list of your canton or of the hospital’s canton.
  • A list hospital outside your canton, chosen freely, is paid only up to what your canton’s list hospitals cost.
  • The extra cost of a semi-private or private ward is yours, or your supplement’s.

Outpatient extras

Supplements typically add

Contributions to glasses and contact lenses, complementary and alternative medicine, medicines basic insurance does not pay, psychotherapy by non-medical therapists, household help, spa and recovery cures, and transport and rescue. Some insurers add fitness and health checks.

Basic insurance already covers

  • Complementary medicine: five treatments, acupuncture, anthroposophic medicine, drug therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, classical homeopathy and phytotherapy, and only from doctors with the recognised additional qualification.
  • Medicines: those on the Spezialitätenliste, about 3’000.
  • Glasses and contact lenses: CHF 180 a year up to age 18; adults only for very strong visual defects or certain illnesses.
  • Psychotherapy by doctors, and psychological psychotherapy a doctor orders (since 01.07.2022).
  • Spa cure: CHF 10 a day for 21 days a year, if a doctor prescribes it.
  • Transport: half the cost, up to CHF 500 a year; rescue in Switzerland: half, up to CHF 5’000 a year. Household help: not covered.

Dental

Supplements typically add

Dental treatment basic insurance does not pay, for example cleaning, braces, root treatment, caries and implants, within the limits each product sets.

Basic insurance already covers

  • Usual dental care, such as fillings for caries or braces, is not covered.
  • Basic insurance pays only for a serious disease of the chewing system, for dental treatment that is part of treating a serious general illness, and after an accident when no other insurance pays.

Abroad and travel

Supplements typically add

Extra contributions to transport and rescue in Switzerland and abroad, and travel insurance.

Basic insurance already covers

  • EU, EFTA and the UK: with the European health insurance card, the same benefits as people insured there.
  • Elsewhere, in an emergency: up to twice what the treatment would cost in Switzerland; for a hospital stay at most 90% of the Swiss cost.
  • Transport abroad: half the cost, up to CHF 1’000 a year.
  • FOPH notes that a travel supplement can be necessary for some countries, for example the USA, Australia and Asia.

Daily allowance

Supplements typically add

A daily amount when illness keeps you from working.

Basic insurance already covers

  • Compulsory basic insurance pays no daily allowance. The KVG provides a separate, voluntary daily-allowance insurance (Art. 1a para. 1, Art. 67 ff.).
  • It is open to people from 15 to 64 and can be with another insurer than the basic insurance (Art. 67 paras. 1 and 2).

Questions people ask

6 questions, with the law behind each answer.

Is supplementary health insurance compulsory?

No. Basic insurance (KVG) is compulsory; a supplement is voluntary and covers extra comfort or benefits that basic insurance does not pay (FOPH guide, 2025). The insurer may refuse an application or add a reservation based on your health.

Can I keep my supplement when I change my basic insurer?

Yes. Your old basic insurer may neither force you to end the supplement when you leave nor end it because you left (KVG Art. 7 paras. 7 and 8). Cancel a supplement only after a new insurer has accepted you, if you want one.

When can I cancel a supplement?

The notice period and end date are in your policy conditions and usually differ from those of basic insurance. By law you can in any case end the contract at the end of the third or any later year with three months’ notice, also for contracts made before 2022 (VVG Art. 35a para. 1 and Art. 103a). For an important reason you can end it at any time (Art. 35b). The tracker above computes the day your insurer must have the notice from what you enter.

Can my insurer cancel my supplement if I make claims?

In supplementary insurance to social health insurance only you have the ordinary right to end the contract and the right to end it after a claim (VVG Art. 35a para. 4). The insurer can still end it for an important reason (Art. 35b) or because of a wrong or missing answer to its health questions, within four weeks of learning of it (Art. 6).

Why does the list show a supplement price for so few insurers?

There is no official price list for supplements: FINMA approves the tariffs but publishes none. Only Aquilana, Krankenkasse Wädenswil and Krankenkasse Birchmeier publish a tariff openly, without personal data, and a few insurers publish travel tariffs. The others price by age, sex and health and state a price only in their own calculator or on request, so the list says “Price from the insurer” and links to the insurer’s own page. MEconomy estimates no price, does not order insurers by supplement price, sends no enquiries to insurers and passes on no data.

Does MEconomy save the policies I enter?

Only in your own browser. Nothing is sent to MEconomy or to an insurer, and no health information is asked for. Remove a policy, or all of them, with the buttons next to the list, or clear this site’s data in your browser.
